The Nixon Pupils: The Beginning – Exile on Burdick Expressway

Spawned, not unlike a sickly ditchweed in the middle of a muddy rural dirt road with an empty Everclear bottle carelessly discarded next to it, the Nixon Pupils emerged onto the Minot music scene in June of 1987 with a message of, “Let them eat ______ <you can fill in the blank with a word that works for you>.”

Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Johnny Jones, David Strange vocals/bass and Bart Klassen, drums and cymbals, the trio first considered the name, the Hitler Piñatas. The moniker was quickly discarded though, due to Strange’s Semitic heritage and the fact the band may not be hired to play the plethora of Bar Mitzvah gigs that were available in North Dakota at the time.

After much strong drink, suppository laxatives and an ancient Minot AFB peyote ritual, a vision of Bert Convy appeared to Johnny through his chemical addled haze and bequeathed upon him the name, the Nixon Pupils.

The lads’ first gig was in August of 1987 at the Battle of the Bands at the State Line Club, where a crazed half-naked groupie “engaging” a six-foot-tall inflatable Gumby on stage during the band’s set, cinched the trio first prize. Not satisfied with that victory, Jones’ senseless blood lust continued later in the evening by breaking the nose of a local fourteen-year old girl, Melly Koody (not his real name), in a drunken rage at a Williston, ND truck stop. The band fondly refers to this date as: “That’ll learn ya day.”
